Nate Melcher's "Five Lessons Learned" at the AWP Conference in Atlanta, GA:
1. Presenters with passion for their subject keep their audience riveted. Presenters who read from a script get a steady stream of emptying seats.
2. Walking through the book fair is like being a lost child in a department store – there are many wonderful things there, but it is crowded and overwhelming and I just wanted my mommy.
3. A taxi will drive you from your hotel to Thelma's Kitchen, but Thelma's Kitchen can't get you a taxi to your hotel.
4. There are more "little guys" with passion for good writing than there are "big guys" looking to make a quick buck, but the "little guys" need money, too.
5. "Free" is my new favorite word.
